John D. Minton, Jr., joined BOAM of counsel in 2023 after a decades-long judicial career in Kentucky’s trial and appellate courts.  His career includes, most recently, service as the Chief Justice of Kentucky from 2008 to 2023. He currently chairs the board of directors of the State Justice Institute, a federal grant-making organization dedicated to improving the quality of justice in all state courts. He is a member of Kentucky’s Judicial Commission on Mental Health and the UK J. David Rosenberg College of Law Visiting Committee. He is a past president of the Conference of Chief Justices and a past chair of the National Center for State Courts board of directors.

Throughout his career, Chief Justice Minton has been recognized for his public service. Among other recognitions, he received the Trailblazer William E. McAnulty Award in 2022 for his efforts to address diversity, equity, and inclusion in Kentucky’s court system; the National Judicial College’s Advancement of Justice Award in 2018 for his exceptional service to improve and advance justice in the United States; and the Kentucky Bar Association’s Outstanding Judge Award in 2003 and the Special Service Award in 2022. From the J. David Rosenberg College of Law Alumni Association, he received the Distinguished Jurist Award in 2012 and was added to the Alumni Hall of Fame in 2021. He was named to the Western Kentucky University Hall of Distinguished Alumni in 2013.
